How to Roll a Joint: A Beginner's Guide

How to Roll a Joint: A Beginner's Guide

Whether you call it a J, a Jay, or a Doobie, the art of rolling your own joint is a rite of passage for every toker. But if you’re just starting out, the whole process can be a bit overwhelming.

You might find yourself fighting with torn papers or struggling with a loose joint that burns too fast. Don’t worry! With a little practice, you’ll be rolling like a pro in no time.

This quick tutorial will walk you through the basics of tucking, rolling, and twisting to get a joint that burns evenly and takes your smoking experience to the next level.

Let’s get started.

The Essentials: What You'll Need

Having everything laid out and ready will make the rolling process smoother and more enjoyable. Here is what you will need before we get started:

Your Herb of Choice

Of course, you will need your favorite cannabis strain. Good cannabis flower with a bit of stickiness is easier to shape and makes a huge difference in how easily your joint rolls and how well it smokes.

Rolling Papers

For your first time, we recommend using a standard 1 ¼ size rolling paper. As for material, everyone has their preference, but wood pulp paper is thicker and doesn’t tear easily (good for newbies). Hemp papers give a nice, even burn; rice papers are tricky to handle.

Our personal favorites for beginners are Bambu or Raws.

A Grinder

A grinder is the easiest way to break your herb into loose pieces. Unevenly broken-up herb creates air pockets and hot spots, leading to canoeing (when one side burns faster than the other) and a less enjoyable experience. However, if times are tough, you can also use your fingers.

Additional info: Remove Stems/Seeds!! Do a quick visual check for any stubborn stems or seeds you might have missed during grinding. These can poke through your paper or create hot spots.

Crutches (Filters)

Also known as a joint tip, this is a small rolled piece of paper you place at the end of the joint. It provides structure and prevents bits of herb (aka Scooby Snacks) from flying into your mouth. Most packs of rolling papers come with perforated crutch material, or you can buy pre-rolled tips.

A Rolling Tray (Optional but Recommended)

A rolling tray gives you a designated flat surface for all your materials, so you don’t make a mess, and cleanup is a breeze.

Rolling the Perfect Joint - Step-by-Step

Rolling the Perfect Joint - Step-by-Step

Now for the main event! With everything ready, let’s get rolling. Take your time, be patient, and follow along.

Step 1: Grind Your Cannabis

Take about 0.5g-1g of your herb and place it in your grinder. Twist to break it into a good, even shake.

Step 2: Create Your Crutch

  1. Tear off a strip: If it’s perforated, just tear off one strip. If not, cut a strip about half an inch wide and 1.5 to 2 inches long from a sturdy piece of paper (like an index card or business card, just make sure it’s uninked.

  2. The "W" Fold: Take one end of your strip and make a small fold, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. Then fold it back on itself to create an "accordion" or "W" shape. You’ll want to make 2-3 of these folds. This creates small channels that prevent the herb from passing through while allowing the smoke to flow.

  3. Roll it Up: Once you have your "W" or accordion shape established at one end, roll the rest of the paper around these folds to create a snug cylinder. It should look like a small, firm spiral with the "W" at its center.

Step 3: Position the Paper and Crutch

  1. Orient Your Paper: Take a single rolling paper. You'll notice one edge has a thin strip of gum adhesive. This is the part you'll lick to seal your joint. Hold the paper with the gum strip at the top, facing you.

  2. Position the Crutch: Carefully place your pre-rolled crutch at one end of the paper, resting it on the crease line where the paper naturally folds. I recommend placing it on either the left or right side, depending on which hand you use to roll (right-handers often prefer it on the left, and vice-versa, but experiment).

Pro tip: Ensure about half of the crutch's circumference is sitting below the paper's main fold, and the other half is above it (see picture above). This helps it integrate seamlessly into the joint.

Step 4: Add the Ground Herb

Load Your Herb: Evenly sprinkle your ground cannabis along the paper's crease. To achieve a classic cone shape, add a little more flower towards the end of the paper and slightly less towards the tip/crutch

Step 5: Tuck and Roll

This is the most critical and often the trickiest part of rolling a joint. So breathe and focus.

  1. Pinch and Hold: Pick up the paper with both hands. Your thumbs should be resting on the front (ungummed) edge of the paper, and your index fingers supporting the back. The crutch should be firmly held by one thumb and index finger.

  2. Shape and Compress: Gently rock your thumbs up and down, rolling the herb back and forth within the paper. This helps compress the herb and gives it the desired cone shape.

  3. The Tuck: This is the magic moment. With the gummed edge away from you, use your thumbs to slowly roll the bottom, ungummed edge of the paper down and around the herb, tucking it under the packed herb and behind the gummed edge. It's like you're wrapping the herb in a blanket.

  4. Roll Upward: Once you've successfully tucked that initial edge, continue to roll the paper upward, away from you, slowly encompassing all the herb. The paper should be tightly wrapped around the herb and the crutch.

Step 6: Shape and Seal

  1. The Final Roll: Give your joint another gentle back-and-forth roll between your fingers to compress and refine the shape.

  2. Lick and Seal: With the gummed strip facing you, Lick the gum strip evenly (don't drench it). Then, carefully press the gummed edge down onto the rest of the paper, rolling it forward to seal the joint. Run your finger along the seam to ensure it's firmly sealed.

Step 7: The Final Twist

Hold the sealed joint crutch-side down and gently tap it on your rolling tray to settle the herb. Pinch the excess paper at the open end and twist it into a neat little wick.

And Voila! You've just rolled your first joint. Congrats!

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Even seasoned rollers make mistakes, but knowing what to look out for can save you a lot of frustration (and wasted herb).

  • Too Loose? Your joint will canoe and waste your precious bud. Pack it firmer next time.

  • Too Tight? You'll be huffing and puffing with zero airflow. Ease up on the compression.

  • Tears and rips? Be gentle during the tuck, especially with thinner papers like rice papers. Over-handling is usually the culprit..

Practice Makes Perfect: Pro Tips for Improvement

Don’t get discouraged if your first few joints don’t turn out Instagram-worthy. Rolling a perfect joint is a learned skill like riding a bike or playing a musical instrument. Each try builds muscle memory and refines your technique.

  • Start simple: Master the basics with standard papers before trying a cross joint or experimenting with blunts.

  • Try different Papers: Once you’re comfortable with the rolling motion try different types of papers (e.g. wood pulp, hemp or rice) to find your favourite. Popular brands are Raw, Zigzag, and Elements.

  • Watch and Learn: There are tons of videos online of experienced rollers. Watch their hand placement, the pressure they apply and how they manipulate the paper and herb. Sometimes seeing it in motion can give you that “aha” moment that written instructions can’t. Mimic their movements and you’ll develop your own rhythm.

Light up and Enjoy Responsibly!

You've put in the effort, mastered the technique, and rolled a beautiful joint. Now, it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor responsibly. So light up your joint and toke away!

Here's a little tip: Snap a photo of your joint before you light it up. It’s a great keepsake to look back on.

Happy rolling!

FAQS:

What kind of paper is best for rolling a joint?

For beginners, wood pulp papers are the most forgiving and easiest to work with. As you get more experienced, hemp papers give a slow burn and clean taste, and rice papers are the thinnest and have a pure taste.

What’s the difference between a joint, a spliff and a blunt?

A joint is pure cannabis flower rolled in rolling paper. A spliff is tobacco mixed with cannabis (popular in Europe). A blunt uses tobacco leaf wraps or cigar papers instead of traditional rolling papers—they’re bigger, burn slower and give you a combo of nicotine and THC.

How much weed should I put in my joint?

It depends on what size joint you want:

  • For a pinner joint (1 ¼ papers), start with 0.5-0.75 grams

  • For a medium-sized joint, 1 -1.5 grams

  • For a fattie(king sized papers), 2 - 2.5 grams

Rolling is too much of a hassle for me. Is there an alternative?

Absolutely! No shame in the game. Pre-rolled cones are perfect. Just pack ground flower into the cone and twist the end. If everything else fails, you can also grab ready-to-smoke pre-rolls from your local dispensary.
